There are numerous rocky headlands, sandy coves and reefs that harbour shrimps, small fish and crabs which the marauding Bass search through each tide and provide ideal ground waiting to be explored with a fly rod and a small selection of flies. Little can beat the experience of strolling the beaches in the early morning or late evening, casting a small imitative pattern on a fly rod to a decent sized bass as it cruises the shoreline searching for food or targeting a large mullet from the edge of a feeding shoal with a dry fly! Pound for pound a fly hooked Mullet or Bass in the open sea fights as well as anything or better! A quiet warm evening chasing a shoal of feeding Bass along a rocky shore has few equals in our sport! The gentle currents and shallow water of our local marks only require a light weight saltwater outfit, ideally a 9ft 8 weight rod with a floating saltwater line and 10lb leader with a range of shrimps, clousers and sand eel imitations for the Bass. A heavy reservoir rod or 10ft 7 weight with floating line would also be fine and perhaps better for the mullet dry fly work and could also double for the sea trout in the rivers too!
